Family Child Care Program (Home Based)
Overview

Originally conceived by BCNC’s Acorn child care program, the Family Child Care project was created to respond to changes in the child care field. In the early 90’s, state changes to the eligibility criteria for subsidized child care resulted in the loss of child care for a significant number of families in the Acorn program. These changes also forced a reduction in the number of available affordable child care slots in Acorn, which resulted in the closure of three Acorn classrooms, including our infant room. However, the need for safe, affordable, and licensed care remained in the community, and Acorn’s waitlist for affordable slots increased. To respond, we created the Family Child Care project to reduce Acorn’s waitlist and provide alternative licensed care.A success, the Family Child Care project became a free-standing BCNC program in 1998.

In 1991, greater Boston had no licensed Chinese American family child care providers. The Family Child Care program helps train and license Chinese-speaking Asian women who wish to open family child care homes. Today, due to the work of the Family Child Care program, more than 70 providers are successfully offering child care in their homes to over 150 children from infancy to school age. Our program gives these women an option to work and provide care to children and families who share their background. Through the program, the providers receive our support as they build up their family child care business. We help them with the licensing process and provide ongoing training to meet their needs in achieving the goal of quality child care service.

The program also runs a family child care system that provides subsidized child care to low-income families. In 1998, the program started a contract with the state to run a family child care system. Through the system, subsidized child care is provided in our Boston-based homes to low income working families. The system is run by BCNC in partnership with Viet-AID of Dorchester. Some providers have some capacity in using English, but Chinese is the main language spoken in most homes.

Low-income families who meet the eligibility requirements can apply for the subsidized slots. Please contact our office for eligibility requirements. The system also accepts vouchers for subsidized child care. Call for more information on vouchers.

Hours of Operation

The main office of the program is open Monday through Friday from 9 am until 5 pm.

Nutrition

Breakfast, lunch and snacks are provided in our homes. All of the system homes join the food program funded and monitored by the state Bureau of Nutrition.

Child Care Fee

Subsidized slots are available on a sliding fee scale set by the State. Full fees are set by the individual providers.

For more information on fees and availability, please contact Kathy Choi, 617-635-5129 ext. 1033 or at Kathy.Choi@bcnc.net
