Family Services

Family ServicesThe Family Services program is the focal point for BCNC's work with parents and families. By using a strengths-based approach, this pioneering program works with parents to create stronger and more resilient relationships with their children by reinforcing positive cultural traits and introducing new information and skills to nurture healthy family development.

Recognizing the many challenges immigrant parents face with raising children in a new cultural context, Family Services provides parents with the education, information, and tools they need to support their children's growth. Parents learn with each other, and peer education opportunities foster a stronger community by supporting parent leadership development and providing parents with the ability to help other families.

Managed by a licensed clinician, the program employs paraprofessional staff and parents to work in multiple areas of social support including accessing public education, special education needs, mental health, family relationships, health and nutrition, and growth and development.

Activities

BCNC runs Parent Workshops on a variety of issues such as understanding Massachusetts' health care system, monitoring media and technology use in children, and understanding youth development.

The Parent Solutions I, II, and III(c) education series, is an intensive 4 to 8 week-long workshop series that educate and train parents about topics such as: the Boston Public School system, child development and parent leadership. The Boston Public School's Office of Community and Family Engagement has recently adopted our Parent Solutions I series as their curriculum for the city-wide Parent University program.

Family Case Management is available for individuals or families in crisis or in need of ongoing support. The types of issues we manage are broad and can range from domestic violence and gambling addiction to managing stress and acculturation. Family Services maintains an active caseload of over 25 families.

Special Projects are undertaken by the staff as needed and include family field trips, advocacy projects, and other activities.
