Bamboo Circle Volunteer Spotlight - Wendy Lee

BCNC Bamboo Circle members come from diverse walks of life and have varied backgrounds. Some are children of immigrants, while others have been in the United States for several generations. Every few months, we will interview a BCNC Bamboo Circle member who volunteers his or her time at BCNC.

This month we highlight Wendy Lee, currently a BCNC Board member and one of the members of Bamboo Circle Steering Committee in its inaugural year.

Tell us about yourself.

Wendy:
I was born in Boston, grew up in Chinatown. I studied political science and economics at the University of Michigan (Go Blue!). Since graduating, I've been back in Boston where my immediate family is. Although I no longer live in Chinatown, my mother still does and we are all a part of the Chinatown community in some shape or form.

What do you do for your day job?

Wendy: I am a consultant in systems integrations for Accenture.

What are your roles at BCNC?

Wendy:
Currently, I serve on the Board of Directors for BCNC and I am heading up the marketing initiative, particularly as we begin to deliver our services to Quincy. I also served on the Bamboo Circle Steering Committee in its inaugural year.

What does BCNC mean to you? What attracted you to be a volunteer at BCNC?

Wendy: I essentially grew up in BCNC - I attended the after school and I went to the Youth Center when it started, and I swam on (and eventually helped coach) the unbeatable Rubber Wendy Lee, Elaine Ng (Executive Director), Leland Cheung (Cambridge City Councilor)Duckies team. Volunteering at BCNC is my way of giving back to an organization that has given so much to me; it is my way of helping to ensure that a valuable community good continues to be available to the families who need it for generations to come.

What do you hope the Bamboo Circle will be able to do for you and for the community?

I hope that the Bamboo Circle will energize our friends of BCNC and BCNC alumni to give back to our community - by supporting a great organization in keeping its Youth Center open, after school programs running, ESL classes going, and its many other essential programs and services available to our families and friends and friends of friends, etc., who benefit from them. The strength of our community and the capacity for it to grow depends on what we put back into it.

Do you have other hobbies and interests outside of your professional life?

In my free time, I lion dance for Gund Kwok, the only all-female troupe in the US! I like to read (currently reading Bryson's "A Walk in the Woods" which is very well-written and hilarious) and to travel (I want to climb Machu Picchu!) and to practice yoga.
