Ms. Zhao Cui Lian, a shadow puppet master from northern China, provided an enjoyable, authentic Chinese puppet show for the Chinatown community on February 3^rd, 2006 at BCNC. As a young woman, Cui Lian had to learn the technique of shadow puppetry on her own, in secret, as this was a craft traditionally restricted to male artists. Because of the introduction of movies and TV, Chinese shadow puppet art has experienced a serious decline. Cui Lian is one of only a handful of artisans keeping to this precious aspect of Chinese culture alive.
