BCNC Portraits: Jimmy

My name is Jimmy, and I am a BCNC Adult Education student. Two years ago, I came to America from Guangdong China with my wife and daughter.

In China, I had gotten a good education, a decent job, and I had a lot of friends. After I came to America, I gave up my previous life. I had to start over again. Some people come thinking that they can attain the American Dream and the wealth, success, and property that comes with it. I came to America not for the American Dream, but to start a new life.

It has been hard and confusing living in America. Every day I am trying to improve my English, make new friends, adjust to the climate, and understand American society. Despite these challenges, BCNC makes me feel hopeful. Since coming to America, BCNC supported me and my family in many ways.

My wife and I both take Adult Education English classes. I have also taken parenting classes. Recently, a BCNC volunteer found tutors for my daughter. Through BCNC, I have met people who I consider friends. Besides the strong support system, I think that BCNC is special because it unites people around a common goal with a warm, friendly, and sincere attitude.

Right now, I live in Quincy and work at a restaurant four days a week, but in the future, I hope to find work that excites me.

Because of BCNC, I have hope that I can find work that I enjoy, that I can improve my English, that my daughter will grow up happy, and that my family will be supported. I am so thankful for everything that BCNC has done for my family and I hope that BCNC can continue to help more people like us.

I hope I live a wonderful life and I wish that everyone can live a happy, healthy, and lucky life too. Thank you.
